Last week it was announced that OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is buying ‘io’, the artificial technology startup of Sir Jony Ive, in a £4.7bn deal.

This means Ive will be joining up with OpenAI at what many would argue is a pivotal moment in the progress and development of AI technology in our world.

Ive played a major role in designing some of the world’s most recognisable technology products, including Apple’s iPhone, iPad, Mac, to name but a few.

Commenting on the implications of Ive’s involvement in OpenAI, Niklas Mortensen, Chief Design Officer, Europe & APMEA, Designit, said:

“Jony Ive’s involvement is a real coup for OpenAI. Not only in stature but in signalling a deeper ambition to make AI truly human-centred.

“It’s hard to imagine a more iconic steward of design to help reimagine how we interact with transformative technology.

“Credit where it’s due: OpenAI and Sam Altman have taken a bold step in bringing design to the core of the AI conversation (where it should be!)

“That said, amidst the excitement, we must stay clear-eyed. We’re still grappling with the long-tail impact of social media, a technology we once rushed to embrace.

“The opportunity and risk in the AI space are even greater.

“As designers, we know that design can make things irresistible. But should it always? Making AI beautiful, seamless, and omnipresent must be accompanied by an equally rigorous commitment to ethics, inclusion, and long-term societal wellbeing.

“Design has always been about more than usability, it’s about intentionality. If anyone should have this top-of-mind it is Sir Jony Ive.

“Altman and Ive could very well set the precedent for what’s to come.

“Let’s hope they ensure it’s one that values not just innovation, but reflection, responsibility, and humanity.”
