SSE plugs into The Gate Edinburgh for brand refresh

UK-listed energy company SSE Business Energy has appointed The Gate Edinburgh to develop and implement its new brand.

The energy firm wants to reposition itself as a renewable energy brand. The move follows the sale of its GB household energy and services business.

The Gate Edinburgh won the business following a three-month competitive pitch process involving agencies across London, Edinburgh and Dublin.

SSE brand position

Working with the SSE team, The Gate Edinburgh will now develop the firm’s new brand proposition. It will also help showcase the business’ credentials as the leading renewable energy company across the UK and Ireland through a new visual and verbal identity.

The brand rollout will start in the spring of 2020. This will be supported with engagement with all of the energy firm’s key stakeholders, including employees.   

SSE’s Corporate Affairs MD, Alan young said The Gate Edinburgh had “a strong strategic understanding” of SSE’s needs.

“This is allied to an imaginative yet highly practical creative approach that we believe is resulting in a strong visual and verbal identity for SSE that will endure for years to come.”

Helen Hourston, Managing Director of The Gate Edinburgh, said: “SSE is embarking on a really exciting new chapter. In doing so, it’s making a big commitment towards helping achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

“We’re delighted to be helping them build a strong brand platform for the future.”

Energy Services sale

The rebrand follows the announcement in September last year that the firm had agreed to sell its household energy and services business, SSE Energy Services, to OVO Energy. The deal was completed in January 2020.

SSE Business Energy, a separate business within the company, will continue to supply electricity and gas to business and public sector customers in Britain.

The company currently supplies around 500,000 electricity and gas metering points for commercial and public sector customers.
