Post-workout mindset drives purchase intent for 90% of gym-goers

New research has revealed that a post-workout mindset unlocks high purchase intent across 90% of gym-goers, offering advertisers a uniquely receptive audience at the point of action, according to Zoom Media, the UK’s leading health and fitness media company.

The research explores how exercise influences emotions, purchasing behaviour, and advertising effectiveness. Conducted by Differentology on behalf of Zoom Media, the study surveyed 2,000 UK adults to understand how consumers think, feel, and behave after a workout.

Purchasing power

The findings suggest that the physical and emotional impact of exercise creates a unique psychological state that translates into direct commercial opportunity.

A key driver of this shift is positive reinforcement, as 86% of gym-goers feel more positive and motivated after working out, and 85% feel they have earned a treat.

This elevated mindset directly influences spending habits, with 90% of respondents reporting they are more or equally likely to buy products once they leave the gym.

While immediate purchases are led by post-workout drinks and protein products, consumer intent extends across a broad range of categories, including supplements, sportswear, and gym accessories.

Furthermore, the research also highlighted that gym-goers are looking beyond shopping for items that support their fitness journey specifically, with 25% of people visiting a cafe or coffee shop directly after a workout, 22% visiting a supermarket and 17% going for a meal out.

More broadly, 75% of gym-goers are most inclined to buy products that support their health and fitness goals on the day they exercise – a rate significantly higher than those who work out outside of a gym environment or do not exercise at all.

The research also highlights the high engagement levels within the gym advertising environment.

Nearly nine in ten (88%) respondents notice at least one form of advertising during their visit. Relevance is also high, with 63% agreeing that gym-based ads feel more relevant than those in other locations.

This targeted visibility directly drives consumer action: 59% say they are influenced by ads in the gym, 63% of gym-goers say they’re more likely to act on advertising they’ve seen in the gym than in other places and 61% are influenced by special offers located near the fitness venue.

Furthermore, physical and digital media habits are increasingly overlapping to create multiple brand touchpoints. Around half of respondents notice the gym’s television screens (49%) or engage with the in-venue music (51%).

Simultaneously, 63% browse online during their post-workout cool-down. Rather than replacing physical media, these digital behaviours complement it, allowing brands to reinforce their messaging throughout the entire customer journey.

David Wellard, Managing Director at Zoom Media, said: “The gym isn’t just a place to grow brand awareness anymore – people leave a workout feeling positive, motivated, and genuinely ready to spend.

“With September being the second biggest month of the year for gym sign-ups, now is the opportune time for marketers to react, capitalise on the post-workout high, and harness the powerful relationship between environment, context, and purchase intent.”

The findings reinforce the growing importance of context in media planning. As advertisers look beyond reach alone, understanding how consumers respond in different environments becomes increasingly important.

The research suggests that the emotional state created by exercise, combined with high levels of advertising visibility and purchase intent, offers brands an opportunity to engage audiences at a point where messaging is more likely to resonate.
